A third case of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome has been confirmed in Korea. The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday said a 76-year-old man who shared a hospital room with the first confirmed patient was also diagnosed with MERS.
He is being treated in a quarantined ward and has reportedly no symptoms except a fever. Health authorities have decided to quarantine 64 people who had any contact with the patients. They will remain in quarantine for two weeks, the latency period for MERS, and have their condition checked every day.
The condition of the first patient, who is 68, has slightly improved. He still has a fever and continues to cough but now has no respiratory problems, a hospital staffer said. His wife, who also got infected, has no more specific symptoms. The first patient traveled in Saudi Arabia and the UAE between April 29 and May 3 and appears to have contracted the disease during that time, a health official said.
