Most schools in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province reopened Monday as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome has not gone rogue in the population at large as feared. A total of 440 kindergartens and schools remain closed, just 15 percent of Friday's 2,903, according to the Education Ministry.
Gyeonggi topped the list with 153 schools, followed by Seoul (102), South Chungcheong Province (43), and South Jeolla Province (38). The decision to reopen schools came after the World Health Organization said MERS infections have not so far been linked to schools.
But the ministry will disinfect all schools nationwide and check the body temperatures of students and teachers starting Monday. It will also ask cram schools and Internet cafes near schools to cooperate with public health authorities.
