Apple has ordered 70 million bendable OLED displays from Samsung Display for use in the new iPhone 8, reports said Monday.
Given that some 200 million iPhones are sold each year, about 30 percent are expected to have bendable screens. So far Apple has only used LCD panels in iPhones.
Samsung is the only producer of bendable OLED panels for smartphones in the world.
There have been constant rumors about the new iPhone showcasing a curved screen similar to Samsung's latest Galaxy S8 flagship phone, as the iPhone approaches its 10th anniversary.
Nikkei quoted a tech analyst as saying, "Apple has ordered 70 million units of OLED panels from Samsung this year, while Samsung is preparing to churn out as many as 95 million for Apple in 2017, in case demand exceeds expectations."
Samsung has shut down one LCD production line in Asan, South Chungcheong Province and replaced it with an OLED production line to meet rising demand.
