South Korean actor Bae Yong-joon, the star of the hugely popular TV drama "Winter Sonata," will marry Park Soo-jin, a singer-turned-actress, on Monday. The wedding ceremony is scheduled to take place at Seoul's Sheraton Grande Walkerhill Hotel at 6 p.m. with their relatives and close friends attending. Singers Park Jin-young, The One and Shin Yong-jae will perform during the closed-door ceremony, according to Bae and Park's management agency, Keyeast. The couple will enjoy their honeymoon at a resort on South Korea's south coast, sources said.
Bae surprised his fans in May by announcing through the agency that he is going to marry Park this fall. The couple, however, expedited the wedding without giving reasons. "Although their dating period was not that long, they had various subjects of common interest to talk about. So they recently came to plight their troth with confidence in faith and love toward each other, in a natural way," the agency said. On Monday, hundreds of Bae's Japanese fans braved rainy weather to get a glimpse of their favorite star, waiting on both sides of the road leading to the hotel and around the wedding hall.
"I waited here from 10 a.m. but was unable to see him," one of the Japanese fans who identified herself as Yumiko from Saitama. The middle-aged woman who became a big fan of Bae after watching the "Winter Sonata" series flew into South Korea on Sunday, a day before the wedding. "I have always thought he would wed some day but never expected the timing. So when he announced the wedding, I was so stunned that I fell on my back," she said, laughing. Many Japanese are known to be on a group tour to South Korea.
"We understand that many of Bae's Japanese fans arrived in South Korea to see the wedding from a week ago," a Keyeast official told Yonhap News Agency. "We heard that rooms of the hotel were fully reserved because of that." For his fans, Bae posted a message in his Instagram account, along with a photo with the bride in a wedding dress.
"I'm on my way to the venue of the wedding ceremony. I'm nervous and thrilled," he said. "Your concern and blessing will always be a great encouragement to me. Sorry for being unable to be with you." He also expressed thanks to his devoted fans. But I will always remember the love I learned from you and will do my best as the head of a family. Thank you!" Bae is the largest shareholder of Keyeast, and Park joined the agency in March 2014.
The 43-year-old Bae became one of the first and most successful Korea Wave stars with his role in "Winter Sonata," which aired in 2002, especially in Japan where he is lovingly called "Yonsama." Park, 30, debuted in 2002 as a singer in female idol group Sugar, and began her acting career after the group disbanded in 2006. She has been an MC on the TV show "Tasty Road," which introduces hot and trendy restaurants in Seoul.
