If you listen to K-pop, it's more than likely that you've heard at least one Brave Brothers-produced song. Brave Brothers is a legendary music producer in the Korean music industry, who also happens to be the CEO of Brave Entertainment. Whatever he touches turns to gold, and if you're lucky enough to receive one of his tracks, you're guaranteed a chart-topper.
A little over a decade ago, Brave Brothers was just Kang Dong Chul, a regular Joe who wasn't exactly a model citizen and didn't have much direction in life. However, all that changed when he first heard American hip hop group Cypress Hill's music. After having his eyes opened to a new world, he finally had a dream, so he took it and ran. Teaming up with his older brother under the team name 'Brave Brothers', the duo experimented with producing their own music; although, with no musical background or knowledge under their belts, they were off to a slow start.
Despite their lack of experience, Brave Brothers kept at it, working with whatever they could create, whether it was just a slow drum beat or simple melody. Eventually, Kang Dong Chul's older brother left the duo for the army, and he continued on alone under the same alias, hence the plural 's' at the end of 'brothers'. Brave Brothers diligently practiced and produced his own music, adding personal rap lyrics and recording late into the night, to the point of having his own neighbors complain about the noise!
It was Brave Brothers' hard work and confidence in his dream that drove him to success. Although he started out with easy, repetitive drum beats, he went on to produce full-blown chart-toppers for famous K-pop idols, such as BIGBANG, Lexy, AOA, Son Dam Bi, Gikwang (previous stage name AJ) of BEAST, 4Minute, After School, Hyuna, Se7en, SISTAR, Teen Top - you name it!
Some of his most famous pieces even include tracks that allowed idols finally break-out into the music scene, such as AOA 'Miniskirt', 'Short Hair', 'Like a Cat', and even their 2015 summer hit 'Heart Attack', 4Minute's 'What's Your Name?', 'Whatcha Doin' Today?', SISTAR19's 'Ma Boy' and 'Gone Not Around Any Longer', and Sunmi's 'Full Moon'. He produced Gikwang's solo debut album when he used to perform under the stage name AJ. In addition to his work in the studio, Brave Brothers is also the CEO of Brave Entertainment, home to idols such as 1Punch, Big Star, and Brave Girls, and stars like actress Kim Sarang and actor Jung Man Sik.
Brave Brothers has been keeping extremely busy. Not only has he been constantly producing for big K-pop idols, but he's also making a venture into the American music scene! Back in July, the talented producer hit the studios with American hip hop artist YG and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony's Krayzie Bone for a collaboration track titled 'Cash Money'. You can even catch a few glimpses of 1Punch's adorable member Punch in the MV!
You may think that Brave Brothers has finally achieved his goal, having produced over 100 hits in Korea, but he's not done just yet! Brave Brothers is continuing to pursue one of his biggest goals, one that prompted him to start producing in the first place. Brave Brothers aims to have his music heard all over the globe, especially in the U.S., the home of the group that started it all for him - Cypress Hill.
Koogle had the opportunity to sit down, grub, and just talk with the mega-hit producer himself.
