Fans of some of Korea’s most-loved Chinese K-pop stars have felt some disappointment towards their favorite artists after the idol singers showed support in favor of a controversial Chinese movement recently. Previously in 2013, the Philippines filed a case against China after the country attempted to claim some of the islands in the South China Sea.
These specific pieces of land were formerly considered to belong to the Philippines. On July 12, the ‘Permanent Court of Arbitration’ made a ruling in favor of the Philippines, stating that China had “no legal basis […] to claim historic rights to resources within the sea’s areas within the ‘nine-dash line’”.
This decision by the court has sparked outrage in China, calling for a movement for the land, with even a hashtag stating, “China cannot become any smaller,” trending online. It seems that f(x)’s Victoria Song, miss A’s Fei and former member Jia, FIESTAR’s Cao Lu, and even EXO’s Lay showing support for the movement via their personal SNS accounts.
Fans are upset as the contested land also includes islands that were considered to be a part of Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, and even the Eastern part of South Korea.
