Chinese President Xi Jinping completes his 2 day state visit to Korea along with Chinese First Lady Peng Liyuan. According to Beijing, their visit was designed to win over the hearts and minds of the Korean public.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told reporters on the flight back on Friday that the visit felt like "a trip to see a relative." He explained that the purpose was to bolster bilateral relations and friendliness between the people of the two countries.
Wang said the trip had been "full of results" despite lasting just two days and drew a lot of media attention with a positive impact on both countries. He added the visit exemplified the foreign-policy principles of "friendship, sincerity, cooperation and tolerance" that Xi proclaimed in October last year.
An embroidered rose of Sharon presented to Park by Xi was crafted in China's Suzhou Province by Yao Jianping, the country's top artisan in that field, a local Chinese daily reported. The rose of Sharon is Korea's national flower.
Yao told Chinese media that the embroidery features Park's name and Beijing commissioned it two months ago. She worked 600 hours to create the work, which used 116 different colored threads. Another gift Park received was a 3 m tall painting depicting Zhao Yun, a general from the late Eastern Han dynasty and early Three Kingdoms period. A Cheong Wa Dae official said the gift responds to the reverence Park expressed for the general in her autobiography.
Chinese first lady Peng Liyuan visited not just Changdeok Palace in downtown Seoul but Dongdaemun market at night, apparently to dispel her somewhat aloof image by shopping for hairpins and traditional Korean snacks. Xi also invited Park to China again. A Cheong Wa Dae official said the invitation is meant on top of her trip to China for the APEC Summit in November.
