The ripples of the influence-peddling and extortion scandal that brought down ex-President, Park Geun-hye refuses to die down. On Wednesday, a court ordered the niece of Park's toxic confidante Choi Soon-sil to pay compensation to the ex-wife of former Olympic figure skater Kim Dong-sung, with whom she was having an affair.

The skater's wife sued Jang Si-ho, who was levered by her aunt into a position of influence in the sports world, for psychological damage due to the affair. The Seoul Central District Court ordered Jang on Wednesday to pay the ex-wife, identified only by her surname Oh, W7 million in compensation (US$1=W1,204).

Jang, who turned witness for the prosecution to get out of jail free, admitted in March 2017 that she had dated the former figure skater from January of 2015 and lived with him in the house of Choi. The ex-skater in turn allegedly played a role in Jang setting up a dodgy sports foundation under her aunt's guidance, using money extorted from major conglomerates.

During the trial, Kim nonetheless denied having a relationship with Jang and only admitted exchanging text messages with her while his marriage was in trouble. But the presiding judge ruled that Jang and Kim had implicitly admitted marital infidelity.

Kim divorced Oh in 2018. Oh's lawyer said, "Jang already admitted that she was in a relationship with Kim, so the affair was not the focal point of the trial." Adultery was illegal in Korea at the time of the affair, though the Constitutional Court has since voided the law.
