Netizens around the world are criticizing Emma Stone’s adlib in the movie Birdman. Birdman is a 2014 American black comedy-drama film co-written, co-produced, and directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu. It stars Michael Keaton, with a supporting cast of Zach Galifianakis, Edward Norton, Andrea Riseborough, Amy Ryan, Emma Stone, and Naomi Watts. The story follows protagonist Riggan Thomson, a faded Hollywood actor famous for his role as superhero Birdman, as he struggles to mount a Broadway adaptation of a short story by Raymond Carver.
The scene in question is with Emma Stone criticizing the smell of kimchi at a flower shop owned by a Korean. Her father, played byMichael Keaton, asks for flowers that smell nice, Emma says, "It all smells like f*cking kimchi."
Netizens either commented disappointedly with, "It's a comment that disregards Koreans," and, "Honestly, she could've said it smelled like poop, but she belittles like that, crazy bitch," while others commented more generously with, "It's one of the set ups to explain the character who appears here," and, "Emma Stone likes Korean food in real life keke and in 'Amazing Spider Man 2,' Gwen Stacy comes out as a fan of Korean food. That's why they purposely put in a scene of her belittling kimchi."
