Korean President, Park Geun Hye, appointed Kim Kwan Jin as the her new top security advisor. He will replace Kim Jang Soo, whom resigned last month in the wake of the April 16 ferry disaster. Park nominated Han Min-koo, a former Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman, as the new defense minister.
Han was formerly an Army chief of staff and held the post of JCS chairman when North Korea shelled Yeonpyeong Island on Nov. 23, 2010. As the highest-ranking officer at the time, he was criticized for botching the response. This is likely to generate fierce scrutiny during Han’s confirmation hearing in the National Assembly.
