South Korea has issued a high level alert to civilians living in and near the area of Goseong as firefighters battle massive Gangwon mountain fires. Goseong is around 210 kilometers northeast of Seoul. The National Fire Agency has called for all headquarters of major regions including Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, and North Chungcheong Province to send fire trucks to Goseong help combat the fires.
According to the Gangwon Fire Department, fire broke out on a roadside in Goseong around 7:17 p.m. and quickly spread to the nearby mountain, leading to evacuations in the area. An official from the fire agency said, "It is extremely rare for fire trucks to be dispatched on a nationwide scale," calling the issue the highest level of alert -- level three. The top level signifies that the fire now affects multiple cities and regions.
The firefighters from the area were not able to put out the fire due to the strong winds and had to call in for help. It is reported that 40 fire trucks were ordered to join the fight, with more firefighters expected to arrive from across the country.
As firefighters struggled to put of the fire in the Gangwon Province, another mountain fire broke out in the county of Inje, 165 kilometers northeast of Seoul. As of now, no casualties from the fire have been reported.
