A memorial service marking the fifth anniversary of former President Kim Dae-jung's death was held at Seoul National Cemetery. Lee Hee-ho, his widow, and relatives and politicians paid tribute to the democracy activist and Nobel peace laureate.
Kim was a vocal critic of the authoritarian rule of President Park Chung-hee and on one occasion barely escaped his henchmen with his life. Kim Dae Jung was the 8th president of South Korea from 1998 to 2003. He was also the 2000 Nobel Peace Prize recipient. He came to be called the "Nelson Mandela of Asia" for his long-standing opposition to authoritarian rule and for his Sunshine Policy towards North Korea.
