Another victim of imperial Japan's wartime sex slavery scheme has died, bringing the number of surviving victims down to 54 out of a total of 238 registered with the government as victims. Park Wi-nam (93) died of chronic illness Saturday, the Korean Council for the Women Drafted for Military Sexual Slavery by Japan said Monday.
In 1938, when she was 16, a neighbor lied to her that she could make big money at a munitions factory in Manchuria, and deceived her into becoming a sex slave for imperial Japanese soldiers for about seven years, according to the council.
After Japan was defeated in the war, she returned home. But she suffered from psychological trauma from her painful experience. Only last August, six months before her death, was she registered as a victim. Announcing Park's death, the council expressed the hope that the issue will be resolved as soon as possible so that the surviving victims can achieve some kind of closure.
