Park Seung-hi, who won two gold medals in short track speed skating at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, has switched to long track speed skating. She earned a spot on the long track national team by finishing second in the women's 1,000-m event at a tryout on Thursday.
She clocked 1:21.16, about two seconds later than Lee Sang-hwa, who won the event with 1:19.18. The top two will represent Korea at international events for the 2014-15 season.
Park won gold medals in the women's 1,000-m race and 3,000-m relay in short track at Sochi. After the Olympics, Park thought about retiring to chase her childhood dream of becoming a fashion designer. But she changed her mind and decided to take on the challenge of long track skating.
With the help of her sister, Seung-ju, who is also a long track skater, and Lee, two-time Olympic gold medalist in long track, she started practicing in March and had training in Calgary, Canada in August.
Lee reasserted her dominance in the sport by winning both the 500-m and 1,000-m events. The new national team will compete in the International Skating Union World Cup season that begins in Japan on Nov. 14.
