Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Motors Corp., South Korea's two biggest carmakers by sales, said Wednesday they have sold 10,000 hybrid vehicles so far this year. The total tallied as of April 4 marks the shortest time ever that the two carmakers have pulled off the sales milestone in the domestic market. In the past it took longer for sales to hit the mark, according to the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association (KAMA).
KAMA said that as of the end of April accumulated sales of eco-friendly cars stood at 14,113 units. Overseas sales figures for their hybrid models could not be obtained Wednesday, which is Buddha's Birthday, a national holiday in South Korea.
The hybrid models include Kia's Niro compact SUV and K7 hybrid sedan, and Hyundai's Grandeur hybrid, Sonata hybrid and the Ioniq dedicated hybrid car. Hyundai and Kia sell most of the hybrid models they produce in South Korea.
In the domestic passenger car market, hybrid vehicles accounted for 3.5 percent of sales, the world's third-highest level following Japan's 17.1 percent and Norway's 8.7 percent, KAMA said.
