The world's largest furniture chain IKEA on Thursday launched its Korean website ahead of the first outlet in the country opening in Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi Province next month. The online catalog includes 8,632 items ranging from furniture to children's toys. Only some kitchenware has yet to be added.
Once the store opens, consumers will be able to buy products online as well. The Swedish chain plans to sell not only its trademark affordable flatpack furniture but high-end products too.
IKEA products are famously for self-assembly, providing a rich seam of comedy and frustration all over the world. But as consumers here are not accustomed to the practice, the store will also offer delivery, installation and assembly services.
Delivery will cost W29,000 within a certain radius and assembly W40,000 (US$1=W1,097). IKEA will set up a promotional booth at Seoul Station on Wednesday.
