The figure skating world was thrown into controversy during the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics after fans accused Russian judges being favorable and giving biased scores for Russian nationals Adelina Sotnikova and Julia Lipnitskaia.  An Italian physicist, Tiziano Virgilli has published a 32 page report showing proof that figure skater Kim Yu Na did in fact deserve to win the gold medal in the singles lady figure skating division.

He compared the scores of the top 13 skaters by the nine judges and found that Russia's Adelina Sotnikova and Julia Lipnitskaia had the highest rate of deviation amongst the judges. According to his research, this proves that the two homegrown heroines were scored too highly, he said.

Virgilli’s report concludes that Kim should have received a total score of 217.60 instead of 219.10, while Sotnikova deserved 214.56 instead of 224.59.
