Kim Jong Un Enjoys Night Out in Singapore
Nicholas Kim, June 12, 2018, 9:28 a.m.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un enjoyed a nighttime outing in Singapore on Monday, the eve of his historic summit with U.S. President Donald Trump. Around 8:15 p.m. scores of police officers carrying batons and walkie-talkies were deployed in the lobby of the St. Regis Hotel, where Kim is staying, joined by dozens of North Korean bodyguards.
Half an hour later, Kim came down to the lobby, dressed in his customary black Mao suit and accompanied by his sister Kim Yo-jong and his de facto chief of staff Kim Chang-son. They left the hotel in a limousine and went on a late-night outing after he had stayed in his hotel room all day.
Like any tourist, Kim went to the Marina Bay Sands hotel with its distinctive triple towers topped by a vertiginous slab of swimming pool. He toured the Flower Dome at Gardens by the Bay, a botanical garden with equally distinctive artificial trees, and enjoyed the night views from the observation deck of the hotel.
He smiled at citizens who cheered for him. Singaporean Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, who accompanied Kim on the night outing, tweeted a selfie with him on Facebook. The outing aimed to explore the "fruits of Singapore's capitalism," the local Straits Times crowed.
The Singaporean government is footing all of Kim's hotel bills. His 335 sq.m suite at the St. Regis Hotel alone costs W10 million per night (US$1=W1,076).
