Korea Facing Foot and Mouth Epidemic; More Than 30 Cases Confirmed

Korea could be facing another foot-and-mouth disease crisis as more than 30 cases have been confirmed around the country since the first in North Chungcheong Province last month. Holding an emergency meeting on Sunday, the agriculture ministry ordered that vaccinations be given to livestock in areas where the disease has been reported.
There were also discussions on whether to start sterilizing vehicles that pass through the infected areas, but a final decision has not been made. Korea regained its status as a nation free of foot-and-mouth disease last year after more than three million livestock were culled after the disease broke out at the end of 2010.
