Korea lost to China 1-0 in the Asian qualifier for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Over 50,000 Chinese soccer fans packed the stadium for the match in Changsha, China on Thursday. Buoyed by their cheers, China, which is normally considered to be among the weaker teams, performed strongly throughout the game, its players surpassing the Korean players in all aspects.
The defeat, which was decided by a header from Yu Dabao in the 34th minute, leaves Korea's head-to-head record with China at 18 wins, 12 draws and two losses. Korea has earned 10 points from three wins, one draw and two losses in six qualifying matches so far
With the defeat, it is now uncertain whether Korea will be able to directly advance to the World Cup in Russia, although Syria's 1-0 victory against Uzbekistan in a match later in the day helped Korea retain second place in the group.
Uzbekistan is third with three wins and three losses (nine points). The top two teams from each group will advance directly to the World Cup.
Korea faces Syria in its next qualifying match in Seoul early next week.
