Former U.S. ambassador to Korea Sung Kim has been promoted to the highest rank among American foreign service officers, a first for a Korean-American diplomat. Sung (68), who is currently ambassador to the Philippines, was promoted to the rank of career ambassador. Only about 50 American foreign service officers have been appointed career ambassadors since 1955.
Born in Seoul, Kim emigrated to the U.S. with his family in 1973. He has a BA from the University of Pennsylvania, a JD from Loyola University Law School, and an LLM from the London School of Economics.
He worked as a prosecutor at the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office before moving to the foreign service in 1988. He was ambassador to Korea from November 2011 to October 2014.
