Golfer Choi Na-yeon picked up her eighth career win in the U.S. LPGA Tour on Saturday at the season-opening Coates Golf Championship in Ocala, Florida.
In the fourth and final round, Choi hit six birdies and two bogeys to finish at 16-under 272, edging out co-runners-up Lydia Ko and Jessica Korda by one stroke to claim her first win in two years and two months.
"I felt like bursting into tears, like when I won my first title in September 2009. I was very nervous today because I hadn't won a title for a long time. It's great to feel the joy I felt when I had my first win," Choi said.
Choi became the first winner of the inaugural Coates Golf Championship, bagging prize money of US$225,000 (US$1=W1,096). Finishing in 13th place, Park In-bee relinquished her world No. 1 spot to Ko. Stacy Lewis finished eighth.
"I was determined to make this a winning season," Choi said. "As I've won the first event of the season, I want to continue on a winning streak and have the best season of my career this year."
