Kim Hyo-joo has become the first female golfer in the Korean Ladies Professional Golf Association to earn over W1 billion (US$1=W1,072) in prize money in a single season. She picked up her fourth win and third major title on the KLPGA Tour this year at the HiteJinro Championship at Blue Heron Golf Club in Yeoju, Gyeonggi Province on Sunday.
Kim birdied the 17th and 18th holes in the final round to finish 4-under 284, sending her and Lee Jung-min to a sudden-death playoff. In the playoff, Kim managed a par to lift the trophy. Lee dropped her second shot in the water hazard.
Kim earned W160 million in prize money with the win, bringing her total earnings for the season to over W1 billion. "I don't know how I feel about it because I don't know how much it actually is," said the teenager. "I'm just happy that I won and even more so because it is a major."
Meanwhile, Kim has been suffering from pain in her Achilles tendon as she has competed in many competitions without proper rest. "It's hard for me to see the putting lines because it hurts when I sit down and get up," she said.
