College students in the U.S. are showing a growing interest in learning Korean. According to the Modern Language Association, the number of students who take Korean-language classes at American colleges and universities rose by about 45 percent from 2009 to 2013, bucking the broader trend of declining interest in foreign-language classes.
Indeed, overall enrollment in foreign-language courses fell by about 7 percent in the same period. The association attributed the growing interest in Korean in part to the popularity of Korean pop culture, including films and K-pop music, in the U.S.
