A Korean woman working in the fashion business was shot and killed in Mexico City on Wednesday. The 52-year-old identified as Lee was killed in a robbery in the Centro area of the Mexican capital at around 6 p.m.
Lee, who runs a womenswear business, was returning home after closing her shop with her husband and relatives when she encountered a group of at least three muggers. She resisted their efforts to snatch her bag and they shot her dead.
A relative was also shot and injured, according to the Korean Embassy. Police believe it was a targeted assault as the muggers followed them from the shop. Centro and nearby Tepito are home to many Korean clothing and other businesses.
In September 2012, another Korean identified as Kim (52), who was also in the clothing business, was shot dead in Tepito. Chinese broadcaster CCTV reported that Centro and Tepito are dangerous areas as drugs and weapons are clandestinely being traded in markets of the old city center and contract killings are commonplace.
