The number of twins, triplets and other multiple births has increased three-fold over the past 20 years. Statistics Korea says multiple births accounted for 3.3 percent of babies born last year. In 1993, that figure was at 1.1 percent.
The increase is attributed to more Korean women turning to fertility treatments. Obstetricians say while there is just a 0.1 percent chance of having a multiple birth by natural pregnancy, the chance rises to 25 percent for pregnancy through in vitro fertilization.
