The maverick ex-tycoon Ahn Cheol-soo said Monday that he plans to launch a new political party by early February to prepare for the general elections in April. "I'm going to reveal the details before the Lunar New Year holiday," Ahn told reporters at the National Assembly. He ruled out forming a coalition with the New Politics Alliance for Democracy, where he was a member until a week ago.
But Ahn said he "remains open" to forming alliances with former and incumbent opposition heavyweights such as independent lawmaker Chun Jung-bae, and ex-NPAD lawmaker Park Joo-sun and former South Jeolla Province Governor Park Joon-young.
Asked who will join his new party, whose aim remains to usher in a new politics free from the vested interests of established parties, Ahn declined to go into specifics and said, "I will take things step by step." Ahn wants to form a negotiating body with four NPAD lawmakers who bolted from the party with him last week, as well as other main members who plan to leave.
