LG Electronics is alerting consumers about Chinese-made fake smartphones after a man visited its repair service center with a knock-off G3 phone he bought in China. The company said Sunday that the man bought the phone while in China because it was cheaper there, and didn't suspect for a moment that it might not be genuine.
An LG spokesman said, "We are well aware that there are fake G3 smartphones circulating, but this was the first case in which a customer brought one in for repairs."
Fake G3 smartphones are available for about W100,000 (US$1=W1,107) on China's famous online shopping malls, such as Taobao, the spokesman said. Customers are enticed with special offers of additional batteries and warranty cards, but the phones they receive are counterfeits made from cheap Chinese components.
