Golfzon, a local golf business, has started an outreach program to help North Korean defectors adjust to life in South Korea by training them as caddies. The company said Tuesday that it formed a pact with the Korea Hana Foundation to offer free lessons.
The three- to six-month classes will start later this month. Golfzon will foot the food and lodging expenses for participants and also offer them job opportunities at its golf course in Gyeonggi Province.
Golfzon will run the outreach program on a trial basis for a year and then decide whether to expand it. Park Joong-yoon of Korea Hana Foundation said, "North Korean defectors are eager to work, but they have a narrow range of options," which he hopes the program can broaden.
