A man who pretended to have both EXO and Big Bang concert tickets for sale has recently been caught and charged with fraud. Mr. Kim (age 21) scammed hopeful concertgoers out of a total of 208 million won (approx. $176,000) for presales beginning from February 2013 all the way until August 2ndof this year.
About 838 fans, mostly middle school and high school students, paid Kim 200,000 to 500,000 KRW (approx. $170-$420 USD) each, and they were all given confirmation numbers. The buyers were then told that the confirmation number would allow them to pick up the tickets at the venue. Many of those who were scammed also were reported to have paid more than double the original price of the tickets as well.
The confirmation numbers that Kim provided turned out to be numbers that were stolen from other posts by people who sold legitimate tickets, and they of course did not work once the buyers attempted to pick up their tickets at the concert.
In order to continue to be invisible, Kim changed his cell phone number many times as well as opening seven bank accounts in order to receive the payments. He told his victims, “Refunds are impossible if you report this to the police,” and then tricked others into depositing money into the accounts of the other complaining victims.
Kim then used most of the money for sports betting and other methods of gambling it was reported.
