D-bo, April 6, 2015, 8:10 a.m.
According to a reecent report by the Chosun Ilbo, Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Yoo Ki-june says the decision whether to raise the ferry that sank on April 16 last year should be made by the public. "Whether or not to raise the Sewol will be decided after humbly accepting public opinion following open discussion of the matter," Yoo told the Chosun Ilbo last Thursday.
"I believe a survey should be conducted when the public has been informed of how long it will take, how much it will cost and how much money has been spent already." He said methods other than a survey could also be considered in order to gauge public opinion. The minister said a taskforce of civilian experts will announce the result of a feasibility study later this month.
The cost of raising the vessel is estimated at W90-200 billion (US$1=W1,093), while the duration of the project is projected at 12 to 18 months, he added.
