North Korean Exports of Textile to China Are Surging

North Korean exporters are depending less on raw materials and more on textiles.  New data from the Korea International Trade Association's office in Beijing shows that exports of North Korean textiles to China are expected to reach US$800 million by the end of the year, which would represent a four-fold increase from 2010.

The association says the growth is due to the North's cheap labor and that some Chinese companies have begun sending materials to North Korea for manufacturing.  Meanwhile, exports of raw materials slipped to just under 61 percent of total exports in the January to July period, down more than 10 percentage points from 2011.
