The Unification Ministry says the unilateral decision by North Korea to raise the minimum wage of workers at the joint industrial complex in Kaesong is unacceptable. The ministry met with heads of South Korean firms operating at the complex and said the North is seriously damaging the joint complex's sustainability.
It asked the companies to cooperate with the government to protest against the regime's move. Pyongyang announced last month it would boost the minimum wage by five percent to US$74 per month beginning in March. Workers see little or nothing of their money, which is pocketed by the regime, and many companies have resorted to paying them in kind.
