A senior regional railway official was relieved of his duties Monday following a recent derailment that left one dead and eight injured. Korea Railroad Corp. (KORAIL) said Han Gwang-deok will no longer be in charge of its South Jeolla regional headquarters. Han was one of five officials in the region held accountable for the accident last Friday. A train carrying 27 people, including two locomotive engineers, went off the track near Yulchon station in the southern port city of Yeosu, South Jeolla Province.
Police said the engineers failed to slow down at a curved section of the railroad, traveling at 127 kilometers per hour in a 50 km/h zone. KORAIL said it would seek further punishment for those five officials.
