[OP-ED] Top 5 Korean movies coming out this summer!

Summer is finally here and with it comes some hot and sweaty days. Of course, one of the best things to do when it’s too hot to function and go out to a movie theater or stay in and watch a movie. Here are 5 of the most promising Korean movies coming out this summer that you will want to seek out!

1. Train to Busan (부산행)

Train to Busan is a zombie thriller movie set to come out this July in Korea. Starring Hallyu star Gong Yoo, this film revolves around a train ride from Seoul to Busan where a zombie virus begins to spread, threatening the lives of everyone on board. The film was met with great praise when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May and a unique spin on the apocalyptic zombie genre. Not only do all the events revolve around a single train ride, but it is also a sequel to an animated movie, Seoul Station, which will be released in August after Train to Busan.

2. Seondal: The Man Who Sells the River (붕이 김선달)

Based off a Korean folktale, Seondal is a comedy about expert conman, Kim Seondal (Yoo Seung-Ho), during the Joseon Era. When he and his swindler team decide to steal the highly expensive product, tobacco, they must con one of the most powerful men and hilarity ensues. The amazing cast, including Ko Chang Seok and Xiumin from EXO, guarantee an enjoyable experience for moviegoers this summer.

3. Operation Chromite (인천상륙작전)

Operation Chromite is an upcoming war movie based on the real life events that took place at the battle of Incheon during the Korean War. With an impressive cast including veteran actors Lee Jung Jae, Lee Beom Soo, and Hollywood actor Liam Neeson as General MacArthur, we can look forward to an emotional, inspiring film adaptation of this historic battle. 

4. The Last Princess (덕혜옹주)

Based off a novel about the last princess of Korea, this film chronicles Korea’s struggle for independence from Japan especially after their princess is taken hostage. If the heart-wrenching story of a young girl taken from her home is not enough, there is also romance as an independence fighter in love with the princess does everything he can to bring her back home. You might need some tissues as you watch this beautiful film.

5. The Tunnel (터널)

Bringing a fear you never knew you had to life, The Tunnel shows one father’s struggle to survive when a tunnel suddenly collapses as he is driving through. The veteran actor Ha Jung Woo and actress Bae Doona star in this thriller, playing out the events with true passion and pain. Those with claustrophobia may want to be prepared.
