Golfer Park Sung-hyun donated W100 million to the Community Chest of Korea on Wednesday after claiming the top spot in the world in women's golf (US$1=W1,146). Park placed No. 1 in the latest women's world rankings released on Monday, becoming the first player to do so in her debut year on the LPGA Tour since the rankings were created in 2006.
She won the U.S. Women's Open, one of five major tournaments, and the Canadian Pacific Women's Open this season. "I played my best this year thanks to all the support from my fans," Park said. "I decided to share this joyous moment through donation, as I wanted to give back after receiving so much."
Park grew up in a working-class family, and even until a few years ago struggled to cover the costs of her touring fees. However, as her career took off, Park started to make generous donations. After winning her third title on the KPLGA Tour in 2015, Park donated W114.2 million to the Community Chest of Korea and donated another W100 million last year when she set a new record for most prize money earned in a KLPGA season.
