Another magnitude 4.6 aftershock rattled Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province early Sunday morning, injuring several people and sending them rushing to shelters. It was the biggest of around 90 aftershocks that have struck the city since a magnitude 5.4 quake on Nov. 15 last year, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration.
Normally the scale of aftershocks decreases as time passes by.
According to the KMA, there were another eight aftershocks of magnitude 2.1 to 2.4 over the span of the next eight hours.
The tremor could be felt as far as Seoul. Some people in other parts of North Gyeongsang Province reported that they felt the ground shake harder than in November.
"The latest quake was smaller than the main quake in November and occurred at a deeper point at a depth of 9 km," a KMA spokesman said. "It's possible that people near Pohang felt the tremors more than the initial quake as they had become sensitized by the continuing aftershocks."
Thirty-six people suffered minor injuries from the latest quake.
