Alexander Timonin, Russia's ambassador to North Korea, has been named as a new ambassador to South Korea. A diplomatic source said Timonin, who took up his post in Pyongyang in May 2012, will return to the Russian Foreign Ministry next month and come to Seoul in March or April next year.
Russia and China, which have diplomatic relations with both Koreas, have traditionally assigned diplomats to their embassies in Seoul and Pyongyang alternately. Timonin has already worked at the embassy here, holding the post of minister, but this is the first time a former Russian ambassador to Pyongyang has then become ambassador to Seoul.
