F-5E Fighter Jet Crashed

A F-5 fighter jet crashed this past Thursday, injuring one pilot. The F-5E single-seater careened into a hill in North Chungcheong Province. The plane was piloted by 32 year old Air Force Captain surnamed Lee, who ejected before the plane crashed. He was immediately taken to a nearby Air Force hospital, but does not seem to be in serious condition.
During a routine mid-air intercept training session, the fighter jet climbed rapidly upwards right after takeoff. The pilot is reported to have stated that an emergency landing was futile and that it was absolutely necessary to crash land the aircraft into a non-residential area.
The accident does not seem to be related to pilot error, but instead most likely structural failure or maintenance error. The F-5's in the South Korean military are now for the most part out of date, and will be replaced by 2019.
