Smoking will be banned within a 10 m radius of subway exit areas in Seoul from April. The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on Sunday that it is designating the 1,662 exits at all subway stations in Seoul as non-smoking zones, as the city council has approved the revision of an ordinance aimed at mitigating damage from second-hand smoke.
Currently, smoking bans at subway exits are implemented at district offices' discretion. Smokers found lighting up in non-smoking zones are subject to fines, which vary somewhat depending on the district. Guro, Nowon and Seocho districts impose a W50,000 fine, while the amount doubles in the city's remaining districts and areas under the direct control of the city government.
