A fishing boat capsized on Tuesday in waters off the country's south coast, leaving six dead, the Coast Guard said. The 59-ton boat flipped over a rope between a tugboat and a barge at 4:32 p.m. in waters some 1.5 kilometers off the island of Geoje, some 470 km south of Seoul.
Out of 11 crew members aboard, three were rescued from the sea, but one died, while eight were discovered inside the capsized ship, with five of them dead and three alive, the Coast Guard said.
The capsized boat was sailing to Geoje from Busan, a port city some 453 km southeast of the capital, while the tugboat and barge were heading to China from Geoje, according to the Coast Guard. Investigators said they are looking into the cause of the accident.
