Koreatown will be getting another entertainment venue soon, complete with private karaoke rooms, a DJ booth, and some serious K-pop backing.
The new SMT is making its way to Koreatown via SM Entertainment, which is Korea's largest entertainment company. The company is also responsible in some ways for making K-pop what it is around the world.
SM Entertainment is already operating various restaurants in other cities in Asia, but, now, they're taking over the prime Los Angeles real estate (16,000 square feet). The space which the new venue will be built sits at Oxford and 6th.
SMT will bring a variety of things to offer, such as a Seoul-inspired "anju" small plates menu on the lower level, along with a large patio and inside bar, as well as multiple other private dining rooms, a DJ area, and much more. In the upper level, there will nearly be a dozen private karaoke rooms, another bar, and more open-air space for drinking. Local consulting firm New School is going to help guide operationally.
There is not any confirmed timeline as to when SMT will open, though seeing as construction is already being done, it's likely to open in just a few months. Although the venue will be a hot spot due to SM Entertainment being the owners, the area is already a densely filled neighborhood with big venues like "Venue", "Mama Lion", and the "Wiltern". In addition, Koreatown is known for their widely popular karaoke scene, so it will be interesting to see how SMT can compete.
