Korean companies like Samsung and LG have reaped huge profits as sales of smart phones global sales have sky rocketed. However competition is heating up for high-quality mobile-phone displays as new models sporting quad high definition will hit the market this year, while ultra-high-definition screens are due out in 2015.
Only a few manufacturers are producing smartphones with QHD displays, notably China's Vivo. Major players like Samsung and LG are set to join the trend from the second half of this year. DisplaySearch predicted that 41 million QHD smartphones will be sold globally this year. QHD offers 200 percent better resolution than full HD.
LG plans to release the G3, the successor to its flagship G2, with a QHD display in June. It will have a larger screen and longer battery life to get the most out of the very high-definition display. Samsung also reportedly plans to launch a new smartphone with a similar-quality display in the second half of this year. Industry pundits believe it will be an upgraded Galaxy S5.
UHD displays are expected to go commercial next year offering double the clarity again. Sales will reach 25.8 million units in 2015, 100 million in 2017 and 295.3 million in 2020 to account for 14 percent of total smartphone sales.
