Tottenham Hotspur's South Korean forward Son Heung-min has done it again, as he delivered the winning goal against Manchester City in the top European club football competition.

Son scored the only goal of the match in his club's 1-0 win in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinal first leg against City at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London on Tuesday (local time). It was his 18th goal of the season and his first Champions League goal since Feb. 13 against Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of the round of 16.

This was also Tottenham's first Champions League goal at their new home stadium, which opened last week. Son became the first player to score a goal at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium when he found the net against Crystal Palace on April 3.

With Son's latest performance, Tottenham earned a precious win over their English Premier League compatriots City. The second leg will be held next Wednesday.

Playing in his first career Champions League quarterfinals, Son started as a winger supporting Harry Kane, with his attacking partners Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli.

Tottenham got into trouble 12 minutes after the kickoff when they gave up a penalty to City following a video review. However, Hugo Lloris denied Sergio Aguero's spot kick.

Son started to show his attacking prowess in the second half. He launched a powerful left-footed attempt in the 48th and his right-footed strike two minutes later was saved by City goalkeeper Ederson.

With Kane injured after his collision with City's Fabian Delph in the 55th, Son had to step up on the attacking front, and he later completed the task.

In the 77th, Son received a pass from Eriksen in the box and controlled the ball near the end line. He then cut inside and fired a left-footed strike to give the Spurs a precious goal.

Looking frustrated, City later substituted in Leroy Sane and Kevin De Bruyne to get an equalizer, but Spurs were able to hold on to their 1-0 lead.

Son told the media after the match that his side deserved to win.

"As a team we never give up; we fight until 90 minutes," he said. "I like this stadium. It is amazing to play here. I am grateful for the opportunity to play at this stadium."
