The top actress that is currently under investigation by the National Tax Service for not paying her taxes of 2.557 billion KRW (approx. $2.5 million USD) for three years beginning in 2009, is none other than Song Hye Kyo!
As was mentioned previously, when the actress had reported her taxes from 2009 to 2011, she had stated a total of 5.953 billion KRW (approx $5.8 million USD) as necessary expenses. The problem is, 92.3% of the 5.953 billion KRW does not have proper documentation that proves it was a necessary expense.
After the investigation, Song Hye Kyo had later paid the taxes that she owed. Not only did the actress get punished, but the National Tax Service also pursued disciplinary action against her two tax accountants that had filed the taxes for her since they had allowed her to break tax laws.
In light of the news, Song Hye Kyo's law firm made an official announcement stating that they would discuss the specifics of the numbers as well as stating that the actress herself was not at fault due to the fact that she had left her finances to be completely handled by the previous accountants, and was unaware of the issues.
The law firm wrote,
"The tax accounting firms 'T' and 'P' that did not do a proper job of overlooking their emplyees' work have already been reported to the disciplinary committee of tax attorneys, and the accountants who were managing Song Hye Kyo's finances have been fired. We are looking into taking legal action against the accountants and their affiliated firms.
We also know that even though we had delegated the task to an accountant, the ultimate responsibility lies on the taxpayer herself.
She apologizes that she did not pay more caution towards tax matters as an actress who is in the eye of the public.
Although she has paid in full the amount that she owed ago after the investigation, Song Hye Kyo is deeply reflecting about how her taxes her mishandled. We ask you for your understanding as she will do her best so that this type of situation does not occur again.
We once again bow our heads and apologize."
