Korea will take on Burma, Kuwait, Laos and Lebanon in the second round of Asian qualifiers for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. The results of Tuesday's draw in Kuala Lumpur appear largely favorable for Korea, which has avoided such potentially troublesome opponents as Oman, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Kuwait is ranked 127th in the world, Lebanon 144th, Burma 158th and Laos 178th.
The second round of preliminary qualifiers for the World Cup kicks off in June. There are eight groups of five teams, with the members of each group playing each other home and away in a round-robin format. The top finisher in each group and the four teams with the next-best results will advance to the next round.
Uli Stielike, manager of the Korean national football team, said Tuesday's draw leaves Korea in a relatively good position, but stressed that there are no walkovers in the group. But he appeared confident in the team's prospects. "If our players continue to show the form they have displayed so far, we will be able to advance to the next round with a good record," he said.
