Korea will face Uzbekistan in the quarterfinals of the AFC Asian Cup in Melbourne, Australia on Thursday. Korea defeated host Australia 1-0 in Brisbane on Saturday -- thanks to a first-half goal by striker Lee Jeong-hyeop -- to top Group A. While it won all three of its matches in the group stage, Korea's play has been less than convincing if it wants to be considered a serious contender to win the tournament.
Uzbekistan downed Saudi Arabia 3-1 in the final match of the group stage in Melbourne on Sunday, ending second in Group B with six points from two wins and one loss. China won the group with nine points from three wins after defeating North Korea 2-1 the same day.
Meanwhile, Koo Ja-cheol has been ruled out of the tournament due to injury. The Korea Football Association said on Sunday that an MRI scan revealed a torn ligament in his right elbow. Koo sustained the injury during the match against Australia while battling for possession of the ball in the air.
