Korea won the gold medal in the women's 3,000-m relay in short track speed skating at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang on Tuesday. This is the sixth Olympic gold medal for Korea in the discipline since Lillehammer in 1994. It swept five gold medals in a row until Torino in 2006 and missed one at Vancouver in 2010 when it was disqualified for impeding a Chinese skater despite crossing the finish line first. Four years later, Korean female short track skaters reclaimed their Olympic victory in Sochi.
The team of Choi Min-jeong, Kim A-lang, Kim Ye-jin, and Shim Suk-hee came in first by making a last-minute spurt in a fierce competition with Canada, China and Italy.
China and Canada finished second and fourth, respectively, but both were disqualified. Consequently, third-place finisher Italy bumped up to silver while the bronze medal went to the Netherlands.
Meanwhile, Korea beat the U.S. 9-6 in the women's curling on Tuesday and secured a ticket to the semifinals regardless of the remaining two matches in the preliminary round. This is the first time Korea has achieved the feat in Olympic curling.
Korea has topped the standings out of 10 countries with six wins and one loss. The top four teams will compete in the semifinals.
