Golfer Ryu So-yeon will fund two scholarships at her alma mater Yonsei University. The scholarships will support two students every semester from next year until she retires from the LPGA Tour. The first will be awarded on Dec. 15.
Ryu wants the money to go to students who help athletes with their studies. She missed a lot of classes because of competitions but was able to keep up thanks to fellow students who helped her.
"I studied hard to break the prejudice that student athletes only care about their career and try to get a degree based on their fame," said Ryu, who graduated in February 2013.
Yook Dong-won, a professor at Yonsei, said, "Student athletes want to take classes, but it's hard to coordinate with their training and competitions, and she knows that very well. What she did means a lot to them." Ryu has won 12 events, including three LPGA Tour titles and eight KLPGA Tour wins.
