South Korean Patents for Autonomous Vehicles Surge

The number of patent applications for self-driving car technologies is growing significantly in Korea. According to the Korean Intellectual Property Office on Monday, 208 applications for patents for technologies related to self-driving cars were filed this year, a steep rise from 23 in 2001.
Since 2007, the number of patent applications for self-driving cars has increased by an average of 21.8 percent per year. The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute filed the largest number at 107, followed by the Agency for Defense Development (67), Hyundai Motor (48), Samsung Electronics (37), the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (32) and Mando (22). Google is the only foreign company to be included among the top 10 with 12.
